Nelson College & Nelson Heat Baseball Club are planning to send a school baseball team to tour Japan in 2020 to compete in inter-collegiate baseball games.

Japan has been chosen due to the popularity of the sport, the sister city relationship between Nelson and Miyazu, and Tokyo’s hosting of the Olympics in which baseball is a participating sport.

The tour is proposed to take place in the last week of term 3 and during the two weeks of the school holidays.

Nelson Heat Baseball Club provides baseball services to Nelson College. The Club is affiliated to Baseball NZ, which has officially endorsed the tour.

It is intended to begin the tour in Miyazu in the Kyoto Prefecture. From there the team will visit cities and towns within a close/reasonable traveling distance. The cultural experiences to be gained are considered as important as the sporting ones.

Estimated costs per player before fundraising are expected to be $4,000 – $4,500.

Fundraising opportunities will be provided to help lower costs.
