ESOL Activities and International Student English Language Programmes
Nelson College offers a full orientation programme, guidance and pastoral care. ESOL programmes or Specialised English Language Programmes are offered at all levels, taught by trained ESOL teachers. We offer many courses with a strong academic focus as well as arts, drama, music and cultural co-curricular activities.
English Language Entry Level Requirements For Study
From Term 3, 2013 International students attending Nelson College are required to have already reached the required minimum language level (see below) for their year level before starting a course of study at Nelson College.
- Year 9 – Elementary
- Year 10 – Pre-intermediate
- Year 11 – Pre-intermediate
- Year 11 – Pre-intermediate
- Year 13 – Upper intermediate
Nelson College does have English as Second Language classes at every level to support ESOL and International Students learning and access to literacy. International students are placed into mainstream classes at the start of their study and they must be able to understand a minimum of English language at each Year level so they can work effectively in the classroom. Students who do not reach this minimum standard will be required to attend a High School Preparation and English Language course.
International students can study for the IELTS examination. IELTS lessons are provided after school and students (when ready) can sit the IELTS examination in Nelson. International students learning the English language are well supported by our English Language programmes.

Nelson is situated at the top of New Zealand’s South Island and has a population of 80,000. The region has a mild sunny climate and easy access to beautiful beaches, mountains, lakes, rivers and National Parks for recreation.
From Nelson’s busy regional airport there are daily direct flights to the international airports at Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Nelson’s lively city centre is within walking distance of the College and offers all the amenities you would expect in a modern city.
